Production: Final Video - Smile

Analysis of one title sequence from the rough cut

We took an extreme close up of the lips of the singer which we did decided not to use afterwards because it did not work as it was out of frame. Also it did not fit the genre of the music we were doing as we see the close up of the lips conventional in music videos that have repeated words. The lips were also out of sync as it was really close it was hard to get it with the lyrics.

Audience task

The music we have chosen to make our video product is Smile by Lily Allen. It is mainly aimed at a young teenage audience as it is lively and upbeat.

This is Bella Heaton, she is 20 years old and she live in west london and goes to university studying art and design. Bella is out audience as she listens to Lily Allen and downloads her latest tracks, she listens mostly to pop music. She has a part time job in river island, in her spare times she goes out with friends, stays at home to do uni work, listens to music and goes cinema and shopping. She buys the latest products to listen to music from as she spends most of her time listening to music on the on the train on her way to university.

Bella shops from River island, Topshop, New look etc.  She goes out with her friends to eat in nandos and does her shopping in Tescos, Sainsburys and Asda, she also tries to stay away from junk food although she sometimes cant help it.

Analysis of one sequence from the rough cut

We had filmed a extreme close up of the person's lips. When doing the rough cut for our music video we decided to use that as a base track. However we had noticed that the actual style of the base track did not go with our music genre. It also didn't go with the beat of the music as I have seen in actual music videos. The use of close up on lips are usually used in music videos which have words repeated. For example Voodoo child by Rogue traders.

This is a screen shot from our rough cut of the lips base track.

Production analysis of one sequence that did not work well

Looking back at our rough cut, I personally believe that the extreme close up on the lips base track has not worked well within the genre. The filming is also very poor as the Lips are out of shot. The feed back from our teachers also mention that we should re-film a different base track and replace it with the current one.

Production: Analysis of one sequence that we intend to change

After we received the feedback for our rough cut video we as a group decide to change several aspects of it in order to improve it. The main shot we decided to change was the extreme closeup base track of her lips which was meant to show her emphasise her emotions in which we have seen it done before in several music video examples in the past, but because of the shot being out of focus and the shot not reflecting the genre and the mood of the song, we had to change it.

Production: Rough Cut Video & Feedback

Before we started our rough cut editing, we realised that we where short of video clips.  We tried using the ones we managed to film. We where able to get 4 base tracks using a mixed variety of camera shots, which included; low angle, high angle, medium close up and a extreme close up of her lips.

At the first stages of our editing process we found it difficult to get all the base tracks in synch. Once everything was in synch, we used the razor blade tool to cut the clips according to the beats. We noticed that the extreme close up of the lip base track were not filmed well enough as the lips were out of shot. We also got feedback that the lips base track did not suit the genre of our chosen music.

From our final rough cut, we decided to go back to do more filming of base tracks and location shots. Another feedback we got was to use more colour which we will look into while filming.
