Evaluation- Q4. What have you learned from your audience feedback?

During the class analysis there was some constructive feedback from students.

Some of the comments included:
"Good camera movement which engaged the audience."
"Use of parallel editing."
"Nice use of handheld camera."
"Lighting is maintained throughout the whole music video."
"Eye connection with the camera, suggests strength at the artist."

Here is a recording of what someone thought of the video.

I have learnt that people have responded well to the eye contact between the artist and the camera. The extreme close-ups help create a connection with the audience. I have also learnt that we were able to use parallel editing efficiently, using a method of cutting between a couple of scenes that are happening at the same time, this was mainly mentioned during the feedback.
Another thing that came up quite a few times was the use of handheld camera, from this feedback I have learnt that we gave helped show the feelings and emotions of the artist as she was singing the song 'Smile' of being happy whilst singing about revenge towards her ex-boyfriend.
However not many people talked about the range of shot we have used in the music video, this implies that maybe we could have used more of a range of camera shots to give more of an impact.
Also i think we have improved on the lip syncing of the music video as some parts of the video towards the end was out of sync.

Evaluation- Q3. How did you use media technologies in the construction and research planning and evaluation stages?

These are some of the media technology that i've used during this project.

I used the website blogger to blog the process leading up to filming our music video, such as planning and research. Instead of just typing, i used other ways such as embedding videos. different types of fonts and sizes.

For the filming of the lip synch tutorial and the final edit for our music video we used brand new state of the art JVC cameras. We also had three memory cards where we saved our filming and pictures on.

Google was used for gathering information on the record companies when trying to obtain copyright permission to use the artist, Lilly Allen, song smile.I also used google to collect different types of flower patterns to help me design my digipak.

Youtube was used to look and analyse Lilly Allen's music video smile. I also used it to look at videos that may relate and have influence on our music an example was Rihanna's music video take a bow. I also researched the genre by typing it into youtube, also looking at recommendations on the side.

Photoshop CS4 was used to edit my advert for my artist, Amelia, album smile. At first I tried using a range of text and picture effects on the photo i was planning to use to make my advert. However when doing a trial and error i noticed that the effects i was adding did not match the type of genre i was trying to portray. Instead I used brightly coloured text and different font sizes and positioning to attract the buyers attention. Quark was used to make my digipak. I used a four panel although at first i found it difficult to use especially when trying to make the photos fit without stretching them. In the end, I found it easy to use and it helped me produce my digipak.

Final cut pro was used to edit our music video. We learnt new techniques such as using the razor tool. I found the razor tool hard to use, especially when trying to edit to the beat. We also used final cut pro to do digital  storyboard.
We also used live type for the making of the digital storyboard.

This is a screen shot from our music video whilst editing on photoshop. As well as using the razor tool which we was introduced to this year. We used other techniques learnt from last year such as putting effects in the actual video.

This is the use of effects in the video which we added whilst editing on photoshop.

This is our digital storyboard that we created with the help of final cut pro.

Evaluation- Q2. How effective is the combination of the main product (video) and ancillary text (digipak and advertisement) ?

The building in both of the backgrounds.

The Flower dress from the music video connects with the red flower on the back and inside of the digipak.

Evaluation-Q1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our music video relates to the Andrew Godwin theory of illustration, amplification and disjuncture. Our music video shows a amplification as the video introduces new meanings that do not contradict with the lyrics but add layers of meaning. For example the lyrics are about her breaking up with her boyfriend, but he is trying to get back with her. Instead of making his life easy she is making it hard, making him pay for breaking up with her.

A video that influenced our music video was        Rihanna- Take a bow. This song is similar to Lily allen smile,  this video is amplified just like ours.

This is a screenshot from the music video Rihanna- Take a bow. This was one shot that helped influence our music video, it is a close-up of the artist suggesting that she is strong, and connects with the audience.

Here our singer Amelia echo's the same close up shot as Rihanna, helping to engage with the audience.

This is another screenshot from the video of the guy Rihanna is singing about. He looks very sad and upset that Rihanna won't take him back. His head is held low suggesting no hope also looking ashamed of his past actions.

This is a screen shot from the our music video. This is similar to Rihanna's music video. Our music video shows the guy is sitting on the steps with his head down low. Again this helps connect with the audience of how he might be feeling.

The digipak on the left is one that I was influenced by and the one on the right is the inside panel of my digipak. When I was researching digipak designs on google, I came across this very unusual and eye catching digipak. Although I do not know who the artist is, I really liked the colour scheme and the design patterns that have been put on there. This has been a major influence with my digipak as the heart on the CD is similar to the heart I put on the CD, I used a heart for where the CD goes as well.

On the left is the front cover of Pixie lott's album and on the right is the front cover of Amelia's album. I was influenced by Pixie lott's album cover as it has the artists face on the front of the cover. This is mainly the same for all solo female artists.

Mock up of advert

Mock up of digipak

Do's and Don't of design work

Do's
  • Use clear font .
  • Good image sizes for images and fonts.
  • Use clear photos that are in focus.
  • Use photos that are appropriate shape for the page .
  • Follow the conventions of the 3 colour rule and use colour that is appropriate for: Images, colour and background.
  • Use appropriate industry logos and conventions, properly positioned: Barcode, Date, Copyright, Titles and Artist name.
Don't
  • Stretch images, this will make them out of focus
  • Use layer styles
  • Use unnecessary effects. Any effects use MUST suit the genre

Short-list of fonts, colours, layout and design ideas

Originally I designed to have a 6 panel digipak with a close up of the artists face on the inside, a message of thanks, a page with some lyrics, where the CD goes the front and back cover of the album. However I have now decided to do a 4 panel digipak.

Some of my design ideas included:
A background of flowers to give of a female vibe.

A smiley face where the CD goes.

Also a side profile of the actual artist blowing pollen at the back of the digipak.

Analysis of three Advertisements

This is an advertisement of Katy Perry's Teenage Dream album. It has the date of release. It is also very colourful this is mainly to attract readers and so it is easy to remember. It says the two main tracks it includes which is California Girls and Teenage Dream.

This is a advertisement for the Back to Black album. It has the same photo as the front of the album. This will make it easier to relate the photo to the album, making it better to remember her by. In the advert the same font type has been use again to help the consumer buying the product remember that type of font relating it back to her album.

This is an advert for the album cannibal by Ke$ha. It uses the same type of colours and imagery for example the glitter and the wild font type suggesting that she is a cannibal as fierce as one. The background picture and the font type goes with the title of the album it's very raged edge and rough.

Analysis of three Digipaks

Katy perry teenage dream album. This is the digipak for Katy perry's teenage dream album. The theme of sweets/cakes and confectionery runs throughout the whole of her album. One of the CD's are made as if it is a doughnut, the other one like a sweet. This is not an abstract digipak as it has mainly pictures of her in it.In the cover there has been a great use of visual design on the front of the album. Katy perry seems to be laying in some candy floss, this image of all things sweet is also carried through with the title of the album which is in the form of a candy cane also her name is in the form strawberry juice of some sort. The main colour scheme seems to be colours such as pink white and red, which also helps distinguish what type of audience this is aimed at. It has been aimed at female mainly young females. This is similar to our genre because the artists songs are also related to young females.
On the back cover of the album it is clear to see the same sort of theme runs to the back as well. The back of the album has the writing in red with a candy floss background. It also has a bar-code and the record company. Instead of the letter 'O' being used she has smartly put sweets in the shape of an 'O' to tie in with the rest of the album.

This is Ke$ha's new album cannibal. Her previous album was called animal. It is noticeable that she has tried to emerge the cover of her previous album and her new album together. It is a very glittery theme with the colours blue and cold dominant on the cover of the album.

On the back of her album is the album tack list, the text is very edgy and is white which goes well with the dark red and black background. There is also a picture of her her on the back and the theme of gold glitter runs through from the front of the album cover. There is also a bar code and an record company. It is also split in 2 with half of the track list from her new album cannibal and the other half from her previous album animal. This is the album digipak. It has the lyrics to her songs and also a thanks page. it keeps to the colour scheme of red, black and glittery. She also has pictures of herself inside and a flag of where she is from, USA.

This is the album back to black by Amy winehouse. she is a solo young female artist similar to our artist. Her background is very dark colours which go with the title of the album suggesting depression or sadness. Her sitting alone on the chair also represents this. The font for the name of the artist is very bold and stands out. She is similar to our audience because the target audience is more or less the same, again young teenage girls heartbroken or looking for love.

Analysis of one sequence from the rough cut

We had filmed a extreme close up of the person's lips. When doing the rough cut for our music video we decided to use that as a base track. However we had noticed that the actual style of the base track did not go with our music genre. It also didn't go with the beat of the music as I have seen in actual music videos. The use of close up on lips are usually used in music videos which have words repeated. For example Voodoo child by Rogue traders.

This is a screen shot from our rough cut of the lips base track.

Production: Rough Cut Video & Feedback

Before we started our rough cut editing, we realised that we where short of video clips.  We tried using the ones we managed to film. We where able to get 4 base tracks using a mixed variety of camera shots, which included; low angle, high angle, medium close up and a extreme close up of her lips.

At the first stages of our editing process we found it difficult to get all the base tracks in synch. Once everything was in synch, we used the razor blade tool to cut the clips according to the beats. We noticed that the extreme close up of the lip base track were not filmed well enough as the lips were out of shot. We also got feedback that the lips base track did not suit the genre of our chosen music.

From our final rough cut, we decided to go back to do more filming of base tracks and location shots. Another feedback we got was to use more colour which we will look into while filming.
