For the lip synch tutorial we were giving cameras to film a karaoke of one of our group members singing along to a CD given to us by the department. We were also given a /CD player to play it on and still cameras to take pictures of us filming all the different angles.
Throught this activity i used new skills to keep everything in time for example when the member of the group was singing we had to make sure he was in time with the music and that he tried to keep his eyes to the camera and not at the sheet of words. This was difficult as he did make quite a few mistakes and we had to re-film a few times.
One thing i found challenging was when using final pro cut we had to edit and lip synch to the soundtrack and i found it really hard to get synced in time.
I didn't really use any new tools but i did use different approaches such as layering and marking the video and using the razor blade to delete the scenes that were not needed.
With the opening to a thriller as long as it was edited to a good enough music the music did not have to be in synch as much as when editing a music video.
You have to film the whole thing through about 5 different times in different angles. Also when filming the whole way through the mistakes had to be fitted when another scene but the exact same words this differs to the opening of a thriller.Another thing is the use of marking was not needed in the video.
This is when we were filming a close up shot of his face.
This is a still of when we were filming him at a low angle.
This is a still from when we were filming from the side.

No1.- Planning letter requesting copyright clearance
These are the two emails i sent of for copy right permission to use the following songs; Heaven by Cheryl Cole and Ego and Issues by the Saturdays.
I am still awaiting a reply for the emails i sent off.
Planning: Lip Synch Tutorial analysis
In our lesson we were given a CD and player to go and film some karaoke, and the new skills I learn t though this activity is singing to the words from the CD player word from word and to memorize them and dance to the beat of the music, in addition to having to make sure to look straight into the camera to make it look authentic which was quite challenging. We then had to use Final Cut Pro to edit our videos using new tools such as markers, layering and the razor blade to drag and delete clips not needed and also edit the soundtrack from our lip synch which was very different to editing our thriller videos because we had to remove sound file from our videos to then insert the proper song over our video, along with filming the same words five or so different times in different camera angles/shots making sure the words are sung exact, compared to editing our thriller videos where we just mainly adding in using our original sound and acting which was also the most challenging of our lip synch tutorial.

Lesson 3 Rihanna - Take a Bow
Rihanna's video clip 'Take a Bow' is from the album 'Good Girl Gone Bad' and the genre is R&B. The "Take a Bow" music video was filmed on April 2nd 2008 and is directed by Anthony Mandler who has directed several of her previous videos. The full video was released on April 25th 2008.
The narrative structure of this video clip is linear and it has a storyline which is linked to the lyrics of the song, for example Rihanna says 'you look so dumb right know standing outside my house..' and we see a male character outside Rihanna's house, this links the lyrics and the video clip together and creates a stronger story. The central artists' position in the narrative is participant as she acts in the video clip.
The setting of the video mostly takes part in a big expensive looking house and Rihanna's car when she drives down slowly while the male character tries to follow her, and we also see Rihanna singing in a black background as she stands out more with her actions to the audience. The lighting is clear and bright daylight which goes well with the mood of the R&B music video.
The clip is like a film telling a story to the audience, there is not much edting in the clip as it only cuts from the story to Rihanna singing infront of a black background couple of times. The pace of the video is normal and calm which is also well planned out. The editing is normal which creates a good mood for the clip as it is a slow and calm song. The editing of this video is very conventional to the R&B genre as its not too fast or slow so it relates to the calm and slow lyrics of the video as many R&B videos have normal editing which is not exagerated , the editing helps to put all the aspects together and play smothly as a final video clip.

Research: Andrew Goodwin's main points/examples of amplification, disjuncture and illustration Analysis
From what Andrew Goodwin has said he thinks that narrative analysis don’t happen regularly in pop videos and therefore sometimes make it different to other genres. Pop videos are mainly 3 minutes long and rely on a lot of repetition in their videos; it builds to a climax before fading away, he also feels that women are treated as sex objects in pop videos too. There are three types of relation between a pop video and songs are illustration, amplification and disjuncture. Videos try to appeal to a wider audience as possible and are easily recognized by their features.
Michael Jackson Billy Jean shows illustration because his dance expresses the feeling/mood for Billy Jean the name of the song.
Where’s your head at shows amplification because of the idea that your head is changing to a monkey.
Michael Jackson Man in the mirror shows disjuncture because there is a little connection between the lyric and video or where the video contradicts the lyric.

Research: Analysis of a music video
Oasis –Don’t look back in anger
Narrative
The story to this video I think is that noel has just broken up with his girlfriend and is trying to get over, hence ‘don’t look back in anger’ her and move on as quickly as possible because part of the lyrics is called “so sally can wait”.
Genre
The genre to this song is rock because of the drums and guitar involved in the song.
Representation
This song represents the male gender because the song is telling a message not to worry if u break up with a woman just carry on with your life and ‘don’t look back in anger’.
Media Language
The media language to this video (or edit) is that there are lots of camera cuts and a slight fade to the whole video, also there is slow motion to some parts and the background cast are faded out but not cut out, to allow you to focus on the main vocalist.

Research No. 3- Amplification, Disjuncture and Illustration
According to Andrew Godwin he has identified that there are three types of relations between songs and videos:Illustration, amplification and disjuncture.
Madonna - Papa Don't Preach [Video]
This is a music video by Madonna for her song called 'Papa don't preach'. Illustration has been shown in this music video because the video tells the story of the lyrics "papa don't preach".
Wham - Last Christmas
This is a music video by Wham called ' Last christmas'. Amplification is shown here, where the video introduces new meanings that do not contradict with the lyrics but add layers of meaning.
This is a music video by Michael Jackson called man in the mirror. Disjuncture is shown in this video because there is little connection between the lyric and video.

Research No2. Andrew Godwin's Theory
Andrew Godwin came up with a theory called ' Dancing in the Distinction Factory' (1993).
In this theory Andrew looked at the structure and narrative of music videos. He feels that traditional narrative analyses don't always apply to pop music videos
.He has come up with 3 main reasons for the different narrative structure:
In this theory Andrew looked at the structure and narrative of music videos. He feels that traditional narrative analyses don't always apply to pop music videos
.He has come up with 3 main reasons for the different narrative structure:
1). That pop videos usually are built on songs and songs don't always have a traditional narrative structure.
2). The pop video uses the singer both as a narrator and a character
3). The singer almost always looks straight into the camera- which is trying to involve the viewer at home with the performance.
He believes that pop videos rely on repetition, for example when the video repeats images like the song and chorus repeats itself. Also the repetition in songs of parts or rhythms of others songs (intertexuality) means that we become familiar with the genre and have certain expectations. Therefore pop videos do not have a closure and/or and ending. The 3 minute single that a video is based on must end and this is often reflected in the structure of the music- it builds to a climax or to constant repetition before fading away.
Analyis of a Music Video
I have chosen to analyse Leona Lewis-Bleeding Love
Narrative
The narrative within this music video is linear. There is a participant narrative at the start of the video where Leona and a guy- preferably boyfriend having an argument. The lyrics start as the guy walks off. The majority of the video is Leona standing in the middle of the street singing. There are also shots in the video showing the guy getting ready to leave which builds up a clear image of a break up within the video. The lyrics are disjuncture as it links in with the video of having a relationship. However the lyrics are more based on the feelings of Leona rather than explaining the narrative.
Genre
It is clear that the genre of the song is pop. We can clearly see this from the location shown in the opening shot if the video. The video is set on a busy street with massive buildings and billboards which clearly defines the location being set in a city.
The colourful flashing images and lightings on the buildings and billboards justify the genre of the song. The costume of the artist also reflect to the pop genre as she is wearing a metallic silver jacket on a dark/ dull background which brings the attention of the audience onto the artist. The colours and tones used within the video fits in the moody lyrics of the song.
Representation
The opening of the video represents a typical pop music video due to the chosen location. The artist being a female brings in a stereotypical idea of the song being about love. The narrative of the video also shows this as the video starts off with a couple arguing.
Media Language
The editing of the video is quite simple as there is a lot of repetition of action. This is when Leona stands in the middle of the street singing. Manipulation of time is also used within the editing where everything on the shot freezes except Leona as she carries on singing. There are also a lot of extreme long shots and mid-shots used within the video to clarify the setting as well as expressing Leona’s expressions.

Research No1. - 4 Key Concepts
The music video i have looked at is Time is running out by Muse. I have analysed their music video in relation to three concepts: Genre, Narrative and media language. The genre of the video is alternative rock, in terms of their setting and location it can give clues to the type of genre they are trying to portray. For example they are in the middle of a conference table with a drum kit, microphone stand and a guitar. This is a representation of their genre.
In this particular music video the narrative structure is non-linear because they seem to remain stagnant and their is change. Also while analysing this music video there seems to be no disruption or equilibrium, the artist/group are participant in the narrative.
The lyrics link to the narrative of amplification. This is because when the chorus is sung and the words "time is running out" has been sung they show a clip of people running/walking really fast around the conference table.
When analysing the music video i looked at the media language. I looked at how the video was edited. The video has been edited in a way that shows different shots of the band doing the same thing but from many different angles.
I also believe that the editing of the music video is conventional to this genre because it is similar to many other music videos of the same sort of genre.
