Lesson 3 Rihanna - Take a Bow

Rihanna's video clip 'Take a Bow' is from the album 'Good Girl Gone Bad' and the genre is R&B. The "Take a Bow" music video was filmed on April 2nd 2008 and is directed by Anthony Mandler who has directed several of her previous videos. The full video was released on April 25th 2008.
The narrative structure of this video clip is linear and it has a storyline which is linked to the lyrics of the song, for example Rihanna says 'you look so dumb right know standing outside my house..' and we see a male character outside Rihanna's house, this links the lyrics and the video clip together and creates a stronger story. The central artists' position in the narrative is participant as she acts in the video clip.


The setting of the video mostly takes part in a big expensive looking house and Rihanna's car when she drives down slowly while the male character tries to follow her, and we also see Rihanna singing in a black background as she stands out more with her actions to the audience. The lighting is clear and bright daylight which goes well with the mood of the R&B music video.


The clip is like a film telling a story to the audience, there is not much edting in the clip as it only cuts from the story to Rihanna singing infront of a black background couple of times. The pace of the video is normal and calm which is also well planned out. The editing is normal which creates a good mood for the clip as it is a slow and calm song. The editing of this video is very conventional to the R&B genre as its not too fast or slow so it relates to the calm and slow lyrics of the video as many R&B videos have normal editing which is not exagerated , the editing helps to put all the aspects together and play smothly as a final video clip.
