Analyis of a Music Video

I have chosen to analyse Leona Lewis-Bleeding Love

Narrative
The narrative within this music video is linear. There is a participant narrative at the start of the video where Leona and a guy- preferably boyfriend having an argument. The lyrics start as the guy walks off. The majority of the video is Leona standing in the middle of the street singing. There are also shots in the video showing the guy getting ready to leave which builds up a clear image of a break up within the video. The lyrics are disjuncture as it links in with the video of having a relationship. However the lyrics are more based on the feelings of Leona rather than explaining the narrative.

Genre
It is clear that the genre of the song is pop. We can clearly see this from the location shown in the opening shot if the video. The video is set on a busy street with massive buildings and billboards which clearly defines the location being set in a city.

The colourful flashing images and lightings on the buildings and billboards justify the genre of the song. The costume of the artist also reflect to the pop genre as she is wearing a metallic silver jacket on a dark/ dull background which brings the attention of the audience onto the artist. The colours and tones used within the video fits in the moody lyrics of the song.

Representation
The opening of the video represents a typical pop music video due to the chosen location. The artist being a female brings in a stereotypical idea of the song being about love. The narrative of the video also shows this as the video starts off with a couple arguing.

Media Language
The editing of the video is quite simple as there is a lot of repetition of action. This is when Leona stands in the middle of the street singing. Manipulation of time is also used within the editing where everything on the shot freezes except Leona as she carries on singing. There are also a lot of extreme long shots and mid-shots used within the video to clarify the setting as well as expressing Leona’s expressions.
