Pitch question 15. What have you learned about research and planing a production, compared to AS?

We are more reliable as a group and work well together and rely on each other so it is more easier and faster to work as a group as we have experienced working together as a group in AS. For research and planing for our product we researched for other video clips from sites like youtube for examples of other products and vimeo to look at examples from other year groups. Instead of getting taught how to research in AS, we are more comfortable going off to research by our selves. We have also learned to make a planing as a group by sharing our ideas and putting them together to create a storyboard. We also worked more in depth to create our planing. We are more organised with our production schedule as we have done this before in AS so we are more experienced and know what exactly we need to do.

Pitch question 14. How have you used conventions from real media text in your planning?

In our planning we looked at other music videos of the same genre which is pop. We looked at the editing of other music videos and we have noticed that there are a lot of close up shots of the lead singer. There is a lot of fast pace editing to show emotions. Most of the pop we watched had a narrative and there video was an amplification of the lyrics rather than an illustration.

An excellent example is from cheryl cole's music video for fight for this love. It is an amplification. In this music video there is numerous amounts of close up's of her face. There is also a lot of special effects to create an atmosphere.

When we did a lip sync tutorial we also used close ups of the person acting as the singer to relate it to a real music video. We planned to use a variety of shots, including close up's, long shots, high angle shots and low angle shots. In our storyboard we drew up a plan of using a split screen in our video. This is similar to a music video we have watched.

Pitch question 13. The Plan of Using Digital Technology

We are looking forward to use a wide range of technology for our products; music video & digipak in order to reach out to the maximum target audience. The digital technologies we will include are such as still cameras. The use of this will be during the practical as it will allow us to take images which we can later upload on to our blogs. It will also help us to promote the music video as well as it being less time consuming as we can create digipak with the chosen images. We will use the digital camera in order to film our music video. We could also use it to film audience feedback at a later stage. The taken footage will then be edited on a program called Final Cut Pro. We can also use it for the audience feedback. At the stage of creating the Digipaks we have a choice of using Photo Shop and Quark. Both programmes allow us to edit around with pictures which will be useful for our Digipaks.

Audience Task

“Pop starts are to some extent, symbolic vehicles with which young women understand themselves more fully, even by doing so they partly shape their personalities to fit the stars’ alleged preferences.”  (Paul Willis, 1990)

In this quote, the writer is suggesting that young female audiences are more likely to be influenced by their female star idols. In other words, they tend to act; dress; talk and walk like the way their idol does. I agree with Paul Willis’s quote, as the media is a huge institution, which influences people’s behaviours. A Great example of this is from the images below.

This is Sarah.

Sarah is an 18 year old female who is currently studying at college getting ready to go to university. She lives with a couple of friends in a studio flat in north London. For her, Morrison’s is a great bargain to do all the grocery shopping.
During her spare time Sarah enjoys going out to the cinema and socialising with friends. She also likes calling friends over. Instead of reading the newspaper, Sarah prefers watching the news on a regular basis.  However she cannot get away with not reading her ‘OK’ magazine.

If worst comes to worst; the last two things Sarah would give up in her life would be her iPod touch and her Blackberry.

Planning: Lip Synch Tutorial video

Planning: Audience task

For our music video we have identified a following person who we want our audience to be like:

This is a picture of the kind of person we want our audience to look and be like. She is A female aged 20 and her name is Sarah Maggie and she is from a white british ethnicity who lives in Archway, London. For a living she attends University in south London where she has to get 2 buses and a tube every time, but she passes the time by listening to her IPOD and texting her friends on her mobile phone. She also has a part time job and in her spare times enjoys socialising mostly at restaurants in which her favourite restaurant is Nandos long with her favourite drink Fanta with her friends.

Sarah Maggie enjoys doing he  grocery shopping at sainsburys in which she like to buy the Daily Mail newspaper along with a copy of OK magazine which she enjoys reading and also clothes and music shopping with her friends in which her favourite stores is Marks & Spencer, and favourite clothes brand Marks & Spencer, along with her favourite music store HMV. She occasionally goes on holiday to visit her grandparents in their cottage in Cornwall which she spends time and catches up with them.

Finally I think this genre would be perfect for someone like this, because it has songs like Lily Allen-Smile which are very smooth and quite beat songs, considering Sarah is a quite person this song is even more ideal, also which can often make people reminisce which would pass the time for her University journeys.

Lily Allen - "Smile" Video

This is the official video clip of Smile by Lily Allen which we will use to make our video clip project.

Lily Allen - Smile lyrics

When you first left me I was wanting more
But you were fucking that girl next door, what ja do that for?
When you first left me I didn't know what to say
I never been on my own that way, just sat by myself all day

I was so lost back then
But with a little help from my friends
I found a light in the tunnel at the end
Now you're calling me up on the phone
So you can have a little whine and a moan
And it's only because you're feeling alone

At first, when I see you cry,
it makes me smile, it makes me smile.
At worst, I feel bad for a while,
But then I just smile,
I go ahead and smile.

Whenever you see me you say that you want me back
And I tell you it don't mean jack, no it don't mean jack
I couldn't stop laughing, no I just couldn't help myself
See you messed up my mental health, I was quite unwell

I was so lost back then
But with a little help from my friends
I found a light in the tunnel at the end
An' now you're calling me up on the phone
So you can have a little whine and a moan
An' it's only because you're feeling alone

At first when I see you cry,
It makes me smile, it makes me smile
At worst I feel bad for a while,
But then I just smile, I go ahead and smile

At first when I see you cry, (when I see you cry)
it makes me smile, it makes me smile (it makes me smile)
At worst I feel bad for a while, (I feel bad for a while)
But then I just smile ( But then I just smile, I go ahead and smile...)

Lilly Allen - Smile
Uploaded by mW0ua. - Explore more music videos.

Our Lilly Allen Smile will differ from its original because our narrative story is different. In her music video she gets revenge on her boyfriend, where as we are going to try and illustrate the lyrics but in a visually different way. also the location setting of our music video is different. And finally our music video will have obviously have the same type of camera shots, but in different parts of the video along with the editing techniques and which will be different.

Planning - Audience task

"Pop stars are, to some extent, symbolic vehicles with which young women understand themselves more fully, even if by doing so they partly shape personalities to fit the stars' alleged preferences". (Paul Willis).

This quote suggests that women most likely look up to female pop stars of today. The base their image on them and almost imitate the way the pop stars act. For example Cheryl Cole is a young pop singer who dresses very glamorous. She wheres expensive clothing, expensive jewellery. Her hair and make-up is always immaculate. So a fan of Cheryl Cole will try their up most best to look exactly like her. They will go out and buy the same style of clothing, loads of jewellery, get their hair done and wear a lot of make-up.

  • This is Amy Whitehall
  • She is 18 years old
  • She is currently at college studying Music tech, Art and Drama
  • She is Caucasian

    Where she goes grocery shopping:

In her spear time she goes out clubbing, Drama classes and goes to a local youth club.

Andrew Goodwins Theory

Dancing in the Distraction Factory (1993)

The structure of music video
Rethinking Narrative Analysis.

According to Andrew Goodwin, the traditional narrative analysis doesn’t apply to our new tradition of pop videos; Goodwin argues that pop videos approach their narrative from a different angle to both novels and films.

Reasons for the different narrative structures are:

1) Pop videos are built around songs
2) Pop video uses the singer as both narrator and as the character

3) The singer often looks directly at the camera - which is an extension of (music hall) performance and an attempt to involve the viewer at home with the performance.

In Goodwin’s view, pop videos often repeat the images similar to the way the chorus or lines are repeated.  The repetition also makes the audience become familiar with the videos and gives us certain expectations with the genre.

He argues that pop songs and videos don’t have an appropriate form of ending which should be reflected in the genre of the music.

With some pop videos the visualisation may go beyond the original meaning.  In some videos this visual pleasure can encourage repeat viewing and therefore promote the music.

There are three types of relationships between both the songs and videos.

1)Illustration: This is where the video tells the story of the lyric.  Dance is often used to express the feelings/moods in the song.

2)Amplification: Occurs when the videos introduce new meanings to that do not contradict with the lyrics but add layers of meaning.

3)Disjuncture: Where there is little connection between the lyric and video or where the video contradicts the lyrics.

Pop videos often have features which are easily recognisable. One of the main features is the way women are presented as sexual objects to please men.  Great examples are Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Madonna who all present themselves very sexually. This also backs up Laura Mulveys quote:

‘In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly.’

The videos try to appeal to as many audiences as they can. This is done by not fixing a target audience group.  Examples of this are videos which feature older band groups; they show them in their younger days - in the 60s/70s. These then both attracts younger and older audiences. This is done and thought out very carefully.

Planning No.4- Final song choice

The final song choice is Smile by Lily Allen.

Lily.Allen.-.Smile
Our video will differ from the original because in the original video she gets revenge on her boyfriend and it's just and amplification of the lyrics. We are going to try and illustrate the video based on the lyrics. For example in the first verse "But you were F***ing that girl next door" we are aiming to put a bounce back slide when the person playing lily allen points to the girl next door doing her hair and make-up and him sitting there in her house/room looking amused. Also "i was so lost back then" we want to put a flashback of her looking distraught in black and white.
In the second verse we have come up with an idea where we will see the guy she is talking about begging her to come back to her this is when the lyrics say; "Whenever you see me you say that you want me back". This will also include a close up of both the person playing lily allen and the ex-boyfriends face.

Research No.5- Review of a previous students video

This is a music video made by previous students. The audience is aimed at young adults and teenagers, however in the video they had people of all ages participating.
The genre of the music video is Alternative because i cannot seem to put an exact genre to it.
The narrative of the video was very vague, it had a loose narrative of them trying to spread a message that everybody needs love in their lives. It did no have a linear and there was no disruption or equilibrium.
The media language show great amount of editing done in this video. They also used special effects such as everything was in black and white accept for the colour red, which was made to stand out. This was an amplification of the lyrics because in the lyrics "everybody needs love" the colour red is associated with love, also the main character is wearing red lipstick red shoes and red earrings; her tongue is also red at one point in the video. There is also a close up of her lips and a close up of the side of her face. When she is outside bond street station it is a long shot. When she is holding the sign there is a low angle shot if her singing and dancing. There is also another long shot when she is standing in front of the arch.
The representation in the video is a young and feminine due to the eye catching colour of red that stand out the whole way through the video. She is not objectified sexually.

Research No. 4- Who was Vladimir Propp?

Vladimir prop was born in 1895 in St Petersburg , Russian Empire. His studied structuralism and folk tales. He analysed the basic plot components of Russian folk tales to identify their simplest irreducible narrative elements. He extended the Russian formalist approach to the study of the narrative structure. In the Formalist approach, sentence structures were broken down into analyzable elements, or morphemes, and Propp used this method by analogy to analyse Russian fairy tales. By breaking down a large number of Russian folk tales into their smallest narrative units, or narratemes, Propp was able to arrive at a typology of narrative structures.

He also concluded that all the characters could be resolved into 8 broad characyer types in the 100 tales he analysed:

  1. The villain- Struggles against the hero
  2. The donor- Prepares the hero or gives some magical object
  3. The magical helper- helps the hero
  4. The princess or prize- the hero deserves her throughout the story but is unable to marry her because of an unfair evil, usually because of the villain. The hero's journey is often ended when he marries the princess thereby beating the villain.
  5. Her father- Gives the task to the hero, identifies the false hero, marries the hero, often sought for during the narrative. Propp noted that functionally, the princess and the father can not be clearly distiguished.
  6.  The hero victim/seeker hero- Reacts to the donor, weed the princess.
  7. The dispatcher- Character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off.
  8. False hero- takes credit for the hero's actions or tries to marry the princess.
An example of this can be found in the music video thriller by Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson in the video is the villain and the girl as the hero victim.

Another example of this is Taylor swift- Love story

Final Song Choice

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3syM4oTaLlIOur final song choice is Smile by Lilly Allen. Although we have chosen to use the base track of the song, our music video will differ from its original. In the actual video, there is a clear illustration of the narrative and the lyric. Instead, we are planning to produce a video without a narrative as we want to focus more on our artist. There is also a lot of different location within the original video where as we are planning to stick to one location and take good advantage of it by using different shots types.

Lip Synch Tutorial

For our project we did a Lip Synch tutorial to learn how to sing according to the track playing on the cd, we made Tyrone sing and dance according to the lyrics that he had to read from the paper. It was very challenging because Tyrone had to keep up with the word ans read from the paper as well as looking directly at the camera. We took many shots from different angles; high, low, meddium, close ups, mid shots, long shots and etc. It was really enjoyable when we was dancing to the music and trying to motivate Tyrone to dance. Once we finished filming different shots, we transfered them to the macs and then cut different peices of the clips using the blade tool on final cut pro, once we cut the clips we put them together to create our music video. We watched the clip and picked out a word from the clip so that we can add the music on at the exact time, so that the music and the video can match. In music video's time is more essential with sound and action as they need to be put together at the right time for it to match each other. The music video was finally finished when we put the music and the clips together to create the final product for our tutorial.

Research: Who is Vladimir Propp

Main points
  • Vladimir Propp was born on Aril 17th 1895 and died Auggust 22nd 1970.
  • St. Petersburg University (1913–1918) majoring in Russian and German philosophy.
  • His Morphology of the Folk Tale was published in Russian in 1928.
  • Although it represented a breakthrough in both folkloristics and morohology.
Narative stucture

Vladimir Propp extended the Russian Formalist approach to the study of narrative structure. In the Formalist approach, sentence structures were broken down into analyzable elements, or morphemes, and Propp used this method by analogy to analyze Russian fairy tales. By breaking down a large number of Russian folk tales into their smallest narrative units, or narratemes, Propp was able to arrive at a typology of narrative structures.

He also concluded that all the characters could be resolved into 8 broad character types in the 100 tales he analyzed:
  1. The villain — struggles against the hero.
  2. The donor — prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object.
  3. The (magical) helper — helps the hero in the quest.
  4. The princess or prize — the hero deserves her throughout the story but is unable to marry her because of an unfair evil, usually because of the villain. the hero's journey is often ended when he marries the princess, thereby beating the villain.
  5. her father — gives the task to the hero, identifies the false hero, marries the hero, often sought for during the narrative. Propp noted that functionally, the princess and the father can not be clearly distinguished.
  6. The dispatcher — character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off.
  7. The hero or victim/seeker hero — reacts to the donor, weds the princess.
  8. False hero — takes credit for the hero’s actions or tries to marry the princess.
His theory applied to A music video

The music video I've chosen that would most relate to Vladimir Propp's tale theroy would be Michael Jackson's Thriller, because it demonstrate michael as the villan (zombie) on the other hand you could have Michael Jackson's BAD music video as Michael being the hero to the bullies.

Research: How the internet is used by artists or musicians for advertisement

There are many artists or musicians in the world today that use the internet to advertise and promote either their latest songs, products and upcoming concerts/tickets. Websites such as youtube in particular are used by artists for advertisement.

This is a screenshot of an artists advertisement on youtube:

Furthermore many artists have their own website for further information, here a fan of the artist can sign up to their website and receive exclusive content and advertisements.
